Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today
announced that up to $50 million has been awarded to California laboratories
by the U.S. Department of Energy for the research and development of new
hydrogen and fuel cell technologies that will be instrumental to the success
of the Governor's Hydrogen Highway Initiative.
"California's businesses and research institutions are leaders in developing these important hydrogen technologies," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "These grants demonstrate the federal government's confidence in California's ability to pave the way towards an environmentally sound future and will help us to realize our vision of a hydrogen highway system."
Grant recipients include three University of California campuses, Berkeley, Santa Barbara and Davis, the Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore and PolyFuel, Inc. in Mountain View.
Key research areas will include hydrogen storage, vehicle fuel cell research, hydrogen education and developing implementation strategies. The funding grants for California will total between $35 and $50 million over the next five years.
Governor Schwarzenegger last week unveiled his California Hydrogen Highway Network initiative to support and catalyze a rapid transition to a clean hydrogen transportation economy in California. The initiative will help secure California's future in the areas of air quality, public health, energy security, and national security.
