The mobility of the Marine units combined with the Medic's ability to restore health makes them a force to be reckoned with. In real world situations, the Medic usually sets up an Aid Station and injured units make their way towards the station. This reduces risk to the Medics. See Safe House Fire Team.
Smaller units having a single Medic may opt to run the Medic out into fire to fix wounded units, but once the Medic is lost, the tide can quickly turn for the worse.
By using the proper tactics of Element Support, you have a very strong chance of pulling a damaged unit back from the brink of death. This can also be used with Machina, however the slow speeds they move at makes it riskier to retreat. The goal is to keep the injured unit from being further damaged, while quickly putting him back into the fight.
Principles of MedEvac
Don't forget that Medics can also heal through windows - this saves valuable time, and keeps your medic protected from grenade blasts, direct fire, and other threats.

The principles are simple:
The Commander in this example has been set to run halfway across the screen, directly across and then towards the threat axis. Rookie Move Warning!Commanders are a good choice for blocking since they rarely die from a single shot, however they are valuable units worth 3 Force Points.
Rookie Move Warning! This should be set up with a move and then a hold order so that the medics don't charge out and meet their injured comrade in the middle of the wide open spaces, exposing the Medic to enemy fire. Sneak TacticSet your Medics to heal while having the Halt on sighting new enemy to prevent nasty surprises. The Medics will start firing on attacking units that may pop up. The screen should look like below for that turn:
