Bleeding Edge Technology

New GUI-based XSLT / XML to HTML Wizard

The XStudio Stylemaker from snapbridge Software works on Mac, Linux, and Windows platforms and allows the novice XML user to stick XML data into a predesigned HTML form.

XStudio also allows a user to work with snapbridge's simple to use FDX server application, creating a five minute solution for federating data. The new HTML output from FDX allows HTML browsers to read real-time data displayed in HTML, saving massive amounts of time crunching raw XML on the browser side by doing the computations on the server side.

We tested the FDX output time vs. standard XML data, and with a 1300 line test XSL / XML document, it took over 45 seconds to load and process the XML transformation. Putting that same program through the FDX made the 640k program load in just under a single second! See Snapbridge XStudio 2.5 for more information.

Cell PDA Phones: The New PC?

For years, Microsoft's motto has been "A PC on every desktop." For the first time in the company's history that motto changed two years ago. The new motto is "Anytime, anywhere, any device."

The shift in thinking at the world's largest software company reflects its new understanding that the PC is not the answer to every question, and that mobility and communications are increasing in importance.

After years of getting its feet wet, the software Goliath looks ready to make mayhem in the mobile markets.

Faster Than CNN - Cheaper Than HDTV

What's the best way to get the news on what you want, when you want? Check out the concept of moblogs - mobile weblogging.

Talk about a technology bound to break through oppression - how can you censor freedom of speech and assembly if you are able to see and hear the latest through an MMS multimedia message - when it's happening.

In the public sector, see it as a real-time reporting tool for assisting public safety vs. terrorism and other mass casualty events. On-scene units enter information immediately.

Poor Cell Phone Reception?

This holiday season, the only thing I really didn't get was good cell phone reception. If this happens to you and you live in California, try UCAN's Dead Zone web site. They have an area to log poor service, and also to search your area before you buy, so you're more informed.

Changing Demographic of Wireless Users - Women in Wireless

Roy Morgan Research has found that 86 per cent of women aged 14 to 24, own, use or seriously intend to buy a mobile phone, as do 83 per cent of women aged 25 to 34 and 78 per cent of 35 to 49 year olds.

I think all I could say about this is that both men and women dig new ways to talk to others. SMS is one way to communicate, free long distance is another.

The imminent launch of 3G phone services, offering video and photo messaging and internet-like chat services, will be the first major new technology to be targeted just as much at women as men.

Women In Gaming

See Women in Gaming for a complete article by Stevie 'Killcreek' Case, the first woman gamer to beat iD Software's John Romero at his own game, Quake. In recent years Stevie co-founded a new video game development studio with a focus on creating interactive entertainment for wireless and handheld devices. She has most recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue new opportunities in interactive entertainment.

AOL Leverages ICQ for Friendster-like Play

America Online's ICQ unit -- best known as the first hugely popular instant messaging client, and credited with starting much of the IM craze -- is now poised to enter another hot area: social networking.

Flash Content on PDAs

Macromedia Flash now supports Pocket PC and Palm standards

Flash is vector-based, meaning that it works with mathematical formulas rather than pixels. As a result, Flash files are generally light and download quickly -- a big plus for people using mobile devices on wireless networks.

Flash's vector graphics are also scalable: They can be displayed at any size, from a tiny cell-phone screen to a giant movie screen.

Another advantage of Flash is that its applications and content can be easily transferred from one platform to another. Unlike Java and C++, Flash is not device-specific, it's just as ubiquitous as HTML.

Changing Role of Wireless

Wireless Crime Fighting - This is getting more and more high profile since a certain tall terrorist of the  twin-towers bombing type has been tracked with satellite cell phones he bought a while back. Got to hand it to the Signal Corps and the FBI - they're thorough.

What's interesting, however, is how they knew he was using that phone in the first place. It emerged during a trial of the Kenyan Embassy bombings that bin Laden rented a satellite phone from a company in New York and had used it to direct his operations and businesses for some years.

Smart and Mobile Autonomous Networking

So the interesting side to this is more science fiction than reality - or is it? Imagine a quick to deploy, self maintaining robotic network for either urban or remote deployment. Military and law enforcement applications abound for this, including first response units for investigation, HRT and SWAT communications links, and much more.

Wireless Guerrilla Warfare vs. 3G Profitability?

A quietly growing legion of wireless guerrillas is using 802.11 -- and components ranging from Pringles cans to wire-wrapped plastic tubing -- to set up wireless networks in at least 40 U.S. cities, from Seattle to New York to Austin, and many more cities overseas. The dream is to create enough overlapping networks so that wherever you go, you can open a laptop equipped with an 802.11 antenna and hook into high-speed Web access.

Some Wi-Fi missionaries are techno utopians who share their high-speed Internet access for free. Others are entrepreneurs setting up for-pay networks in cafes, hotel lobbies, airports, and backcountry towns. Well, then there's the other side of the story.

Nokia's Wireless Cellular Camera

Wireless Data Research Group expects worldwide sales of such devices to blossom to $28 billion a year by 2007, as companies rip out the wiring now needed to accomplish the same tasks.

A wall-mounted surveillance camera that can send images directly to a mobile phone will be available this summer, according to maker Nokia.

Battery Fuel Cells - Dui Dit, OPEC...

al Quaeda and 9|11 hijackers from our alleged allies in the Middle East gotcha down? Wondering how to help work on alternative energy sources so every country that is trying to kill us can sell their oil elsewhere? Check out fuel cell technology - new concepts include methanol based fuel cells.

I call this voting with your pocketbook - if we can get tuna dolphin safe, invent the PC, Internet, powered flight, electricity, telephones, TV and radio, making energy from moonshine should be an easy thing...

Casio Computer revealed a mockup of a notebook PC with a fuel cell. The new power pack only weighs about half as much as the previous Li-ion battery pack, and can drive the notebook for up to 20 hours.

PatriotGrid

How you can help fight Bioterrorism from your system.

On February 5, 2003, United Devices along with IBM and Accelrys launched the Smallpox Research Grid Project: a joint research effort to identify candidates for developing new drugs that, for the first time, would combat the smallpox virus post-infection.

The global threat of a smallpox outbreak as a result of a bioterrorist or military attack demands that scientists find new and faster ways to identify a cure.

Now, accelerated drug discovery research — powered by commercial products from United Devices, IBM, and Accelrys — will make it possible to discover smallpox drug candidates at a record pace. More about PatriotGrid...

Biosniffing  - Detection and Reporting with Wireless Telemetry

Our cities are woefully unprepared to deal with the looming menace of bio-terrorism.

The combination of wireless technology with biotechnology is taking both bleeding edge technologies to the next level.

Today's bio-terrorism detectors are sadly lacking, but that's all about to change, now that the US federal budget for bio-terrorism countermeasures has ballooned from $300 million to $3 billion in the past year.

With all those dollars dangling from the tree, hundreds of companies are competing to build bio-detectors that are smaller, faster, and cheaper than the current crop. More about Biosniffing...

Busted Playing Video Game In Parliament

Trond Helleland, a member of the ruling Conservative Party, was caught on a national television camera playing the game during Wednesday's debate about whether Norway would take part in any U.S.-led military action against Iraq.

Warchalking

Now this is finally something interesting - roaming without a provider, hobo style. Other Wi-Fi wireless pioneers are banding war parties together in a grassroots effort to keep wireless costs low. After all, what's the big deal in paying 24 hours a day for a broadband connection you may only use a few hours a night? This is really going to give tremendous momentum to ICT growth in developing (third-world) countries. Then again, Harvard MBA-holding Vice Presidents sometimes have a problem figuring out where they should look for trends when they want to overcharge consumers.

Taking a look at Estonia and how they are integrating Wi-Fi shows me that a common sense approach to technology growth is something developing countries are taking seriously.

Payphone Wi-Fi Hotspots - Watch out, Starbucks!

This is one of the better ideas I've seen in a while. Take a wireline payphone, something gathering dust since the cell phone industry hit 50%, and wire in a Wi-Fi link. Now every wireless laptop can synch up from 7-11 or Circle K's nationwide. Watch out, Starbucks and T-Mobile, there's a new business plan in town!

Plain Language Searchability

Digital Valets - basically your own Private Investigator in a pocket, or Reference Librarian on staff to serve you when you need the information. There's no need for the boolean logic when you can simply say what you would like to find - even better? Multi-language support. This can remove the barriers in communication and cross-referencing information. It's a whole new ball game, and implementing it properly is exactly where 3nW Corporation stands.

Now imagine it all leveraged from a Palm or Pocket PC remotely, with a simple interface. With a wireless PDA, this can be anywhere you need it also. Check this out - you won't be disappointed. Wait until I mention that there are ways to combine the great Instant Messaging capabilities out there, with smart plain language searchability 'bots'. Now are you beginning to get the picture?

PDA Phone Fusion

Some of the coolest gadgets bring a phone and a PDA in one package. The first generation of these was a bit bulky, but now they're slimming down quite a bit and keeping with the trend. One of the drawbacks to extended use is battery life, so make sure you have extras or a good recharger adaptor when traveling...
