Company continues aggressive introduction of high-speed wireless data services in North America
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 2003-- AT&T Wireless (NYSE:AWE - News) announced today that it has entered the Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) market with the introduction of GoPort(SM), a high-speed wireless data service designed to keep mobile professionals connected to their corporate information while away from the office.
The company also said it has reached an agreement with Wayport, a leading Wi-Fi service provider, to allow roaming on that company's Wi-Fi networks in airports and hundreds of hotels across the United States.
Customers can currently sign-up for AT&T Wireless GoPort service directly at Denver International Airport and, in the near future, at Philadelphia International Airport. In addition, starting in mid-February, customers will be able to register for GoPort and access Wi-Fi service at airports in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Jose, and Seattle as well as more than 475 major hotels across the United States.
"For today's mobile professionals, staying connected to the office isn't a nicety -- it's a necessity," said Valerie Kahn, senior vice president of AT&T Wireless Mobile Multimedia Services. "Whether using GoPort, or any of our other wireless data solutions, customers can now maintain continuous connections with their critical office information while they're on the move. Wi-Fi provides a perfect complement to our portfolio of high-speed wireless data services."
AT&T Wireless offers high-speed wireless data services on its national GSM/GPRS network major markets across the country. GPRS provides data speeds comparable to a landline dial-up connection. Wi-Fi service, capable of speeds approaching 11mb/second, is designed to serve smaller areas like individual airports, corporate campuses, or hotel lobbies.
"Working together, AT&T Wireless and Wayport will now be able to offer AT&T Wireless customers access to our nationwide network of hotels and airports, allowing them to remain productive and in-touch when they travel" said Dave Vucina, CEO of Wayport. "In addition, this roaming agreement will drive a substantial number of business travelers to Wayport hotels and airports and as a result, they can benefit through increased occupancy and revenue."
With an active account, mobile computing device and compatible Wi-Fi modem card, travelers will be able to access GoPort's high-speed network anywhere AT&T Wireless or Wayport offer service.
Several pricing options are available to meet customers' varied data needs:
Single connect - $9.99 (good for unlimited connections in one location for 24-hours)
