GSM/GPRS: General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a global wireless standard that uses existing GSM (Global System for Mobile telecommunications) radio base stations and converts wireless data into standard Internet packets, enabling interoperability between the Internet and the GSM/GPRS network. But will GPRS make enough money to pay for 3G development?
Rule of thumb: In the United States, until at least 2004 you are going to look at GPRS or 1xRTT for the wireless data standards. Both transmit at 30 - 60kbps realistic speeds, and when they are using GSM or CDMA networks that aren't 'enhanced', they will be 4.8 - 14.4kbps.
Don't believe the hype about how much faster CDMA is than GSM right now - in the future there will be a huge jump, however that's called 3G and isn't going to happen until there is a market. Until then, compare apples to apples, and be aware of new technologies that will take out the capacity issues of GSM that CDMA pundits sell against.
The 3G market won't happen until the content is developed, and right now consumers and businesses are happy with the bandwidth provided for their ROI in the mobile world. After all, how many people really need that fifty page spreadsheet downloaded on their tiny cell phone for the cost of hardware and connectivity associated with making it possible?
See 3G - when is this going to show up?
In the meantime, the killer app seems to be found combining voice with internet communication such as instant messaging, SMS, and email.
